Blue Lakes Trail - Breckenridge, CO | Engagement Session

When Bre told me she and her boyfriend were taking a trip out to Colorado and wanted couples photos, I knew I had to find an absolutely STUNNING spot; 1. to have a gorgeous background in their photos and 2. to show off my amazing home state! I quickly went to work researching hikes in Breckenridge (where they were staying around the date she booked me for their couples session) and after giving them a few options, she settled on Blue Lakes Trail. And boy oh boy am I SO glad she did!

I arrived on location a little early to scout it out, get a feel for the trail, and pick out spots I wanted to stop and take photos at. After taking a pretty bumpy ride up a dirt road (beware of potholes if you go), I arrived at the top of the road and was met with literally the prettiest view...from just the parking lot!

Blue lakes trail in Breckenridge Colorado. Alpine lake surrounded by snow creviced mountains.

I seriously took that photo as I got out of my car. The green foliage, the blue alpine water, the snow tucked into the crevices of the mountains...it was picture perfect.

Technically, the actual Blue Lakes Trailhead is about a 0.8 mile walk up the dirt road but you can't take vehicles past a service gate. I debated having us go all the way to the actual trailhead, but the spot right below the parking area was so perfect I just decided to stay at this spot and walk around the lower lake to grab photos. And I'm glad we did!

From South Dakota to Colorado...it was more than just a trip

Bre found me on Instagram and asked if she could book a couples shoot with me while she and her boyfriend were visiting Colorado. They stopped in Boulder first for a few days, then stayed in Breckenridge for the last part of their trip spending lots of time hiking and exploring the beautiful mountain scenery. I was super excited to give them some epic Colorado mountain couples photos but was even MORE excited when...

...a few days before our scheduled shoot, Ash & Bre went on a hike with their little doggo (who is quite the little trail pup) and stopped to take their traditional hiking photo together. Ash set up a phone on a rock to take their photo, which was not out of the ordinary since they often took photos together while doing things and going on hikes. After a few clicks, he asked for one more, knelt down, and PROPOSED!

If hearts could squeal, that's what mine did while hearing them tell the story! It was so cute and so well timed, too. Couples photos turned into engagement photos and I am just beyond thrilled I got to capture such amazing memories and moments for them! (We even made a little engagement video, but you'll have to find it after all my favorite photos. The song that they chose is the most precious thing ever and I could not have picked a better one myself.)
