Crested Butte Elopement Locations: A Guide for Planning Tips, Seasons, and More
If you’ve ever dreamed about saying your vows surrounded by mountains, aspens, and the kind of golden hour that doesn’t even look real, let me introduce you to your new obsession: a Crested Butte elopement!
Natalie and Floyd’s day is the perfect example of why this little mountain town is such a gem. They drove all the way from Tennessee to elope in Colorado, told almost no one, and turned their wedding day into the most peaceful, joy-filled adventure. And honestly, that’s exactly what a Crested Butte elopement should feel like!
This blog is part love story, part planning guide, because if you’re even considering eloping in Crested Butte, I want you to have everything you need to start dreaming it up!
Natalie + Floyd’s Secret Crested Butte Elopement
Natalie and Floyd kept their elopement mostly under wraps. Very few people knew they were flying out to Colorado to get married. They took time over the holidays to tell family afterward, which is why I’m just now sharing their day (with full permission, of course).
And from the moment we started at Lake Irwin, it felt calm, peaceful, and so easy! They laughed constantly, giggled and cried through their vows, they talked the whole day like it was just another adventure together, except this one ended in marriage!
After I sent their sneak peeks, Natalie said:
“Thank you, these are absolutely beautiful! We are super happy with them. Especially loved the one with you in it, haha! But seriously, they don’t even look real; they are so beautiful. Thank you for everything!”
It’s days and couples like this that remind me why I love what I do so much!
Best Crested Butte Elopement Locations
There’s something about Crested Butte that just hits differently. It feels tucked away and peaceful without being impossible to get to. You’ve got mountain views in every direction, wildflowers in the summer, glowing aspens in the fall, and way fewer crowds than other Colorado towns.
A Crested Butte elopement gives you variety without needing to drive hours between locations. Forest, alpine lakes, open overlooks, charming town spots, all within reach! It’s also perfect if you want an intimate day that feels intentional. You’re not rushing from one big event to the next. You’re exploring, pausing, breathing, actually soaking it in. As a destination elopement photographer, I’m always looking for places that allow couples to move through their day naturally. Crested Butte makes that so easy.
Here are some of the best Crested Butte elopement locations to consider:
Lake Irwin
We started at Lake Irwin with a little charcuterie picnic in the forest. It’s quiet, woodsy, and feels private. Perfect for slow moments, first looks, or just taking a breath before vows.
Snodgrass Trailhead
Snodgrass Trailhead is where they exchanged vows, and WOW. The view of Crested Butte Mountain from up there is unreal, especially when the light starts to glow. If you want epic mountain scenery without a huge hike, this is such a good option.
Umbrella Bar
We ended their day at the Umbrella Bar during golden hour into blue hour. The aspens were just starting to turn, and I pushed hard for us to make it up there; it was totally worth it. The fall color up high can change fast, and catching it at the right time is magic.
Other incredible spots to consider for your Crested Butte elopement:
Emerald Lake, it’s in the name. This is such a special spot!
Kebler Pass (especially in peak aspen season)
Gothic Road, honestly, just driving this road is stunning
You really can’t go wrong here.
Best Time of Year to Elope in Crested Butte
If you’re planning a Crested Butte elopement, timing matters so much! Here’s a quick breakdown:
June–October is your sweet spot.
July: Peak wildflowers. The mountains are lush and colorful.
Late September to Early October: Aspen leaves start turning gold, and it is unreal. This is when Natalie and Floyd eloped, and the glow was next level.
Summer Afternoons: Expect possible rain showers. It’s Colorado. It happens. And sometimes? It leads to the dreamiest light.
If you’re dreaming of a fall elopement in Crested Butte, early October is absolute prime time for those golden aspen leaves.
Where to Stay for Your Crested Butte Elopement
Your lodging can shape your timeline more than you think, especially for sunrise or sunset plans. I stayed at Elevation Hotel + Spa and loved it, super convenient and comfortable. Natalie and Floyd stayed at The Grand Lodge, which is another great option for easy access to town and the mountain. Choosing somewhere close to your ceremony location makes the whole day feel smoother and less rushed.
What Makes a Crested Butte Elopement Feel So Special
No matter how many people have elopements or weddings here, it’s unique and special, and I love places that feel that way! Natalie and Floyd radiated joy and comfort all day long. You could tell they felt safe, steady, and excited. And that’s what an elopement should be: intentional, unrushed, deeply personal!
